Appliance Repair Fraud Rises in Tricity, Senior Citizen Alleges Cheating

Men posing as Samsung technicians allegedly took microwave; complaint filed with SSP Mohali Mohali, January 19, 2026:Cases of domestic electrical appliance repair fraud are steadily increasing across the Tricity region, including Chandigarh and Mohali, with senior citizens emerging as particularly vulnerable targets. A fresh case has surfaced from Sector 70, Mohali, where a senior citizen has submitted a written complaint to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mohali. The complaint alleges that two individuals posing as authorized Samsung technicians took away the complainant’s Samsung microwave oven on the pretext of repair and subsequently disappeared. According to the complaint, the senior citizen owns a Samsung microwave oven that developed a technical fault on December 6, 2025. While the heating function stopped working, other features of the appliance were operational. On the same day, he registered an online service request with Samsung Customer Care. Later that afternoon, a person identified as “Abhishek,” accompanied by another individual, arrived at his residence and claimed to be a Samsung representative. After inspecting the appliance, the technicians allegedly claimed that the heating system was faulty and that the microwave would need to be taken to a service lab for repair. The repair cost was quoted at ₹4,000. Before taking the microwave, Abhishek reportedly spoke on the phone with a person identified as the service centre in-charge, Anmol Singh, and assured the complainant that the appliance would be repaired and returned the next day. Trusting the claim that the technicians were authorised Samsung representatives, the senior citizen allowed them to take the microwave. However, after the microwave was taken away, repeated attempts by the complaint to contact the technician initially yielded no response. On one occasion, Abhishek answered the call and asked the complainant to collect the microwave from near Nijjar Chowk, Sunny Enclave, Kharar, at around 1:30 pm. After reaching the location, the complainant was made to wait for more than two hours, but no one turned up, and subsequent phone calls went unanswered. Subsequent efforts to reach the alleged service centre in-charge, Anmol Singh, also failed. After informing Samsung Customer Care, the complainant received a call from the Samsung service centre in Mohali, where he was told that no employee named Abhishek was working with them. As of January 19, the microwave has not been returned, and there has been no further contact from the accused. Subsequently, the senior citizen submitted a detailed written complaint to the SSP Mohali, providing the names and phone numbers of the alleged culprits and seeking legal action and recovery of his Samsung microwave. The complainant has also requested the police to initiate action under the appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code, recover his microwave oven or provide adequate compensation, and take strict action against the accused to prevent similar incidents. In his complaint, the senior citizen stated that the actions of the accused amounted to fraud, forgery, criminal breach of trust, and misappropriation of property, causing him financial loss and mental distress. The complaint noted, “Strict action should be taken against such individuals so that this heinous crime does not happen to anyone else.” Police officials have assured the complainant that the matter will be investigated and necessary legal action will be taken to curb the growing number of appliance repair fraud cases in the Tricity.

Changes to the MGNREGA law are a betrayal of workers: Chandigarh Experts and Activists

Speakers raise alarm over proposed legal, technical and financial changes to MGNREGA. Chandigarh, January 11:Concerns over proposed MGNREGA (MAHATMA GANDHI NATIONAL RURAL EMPLOYMENT GUARANTEE ) law changes dominated a seminar titled “MGNREGA – Changes, Challenges and the Road Ahead” held at Kendri Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Sector 28-A, on Sunday. The seminar was organised with the support of the Pind Bachao Punjab Bachao Manch and attended by leading intellectuals, journalists and social activists from across Punjab. Speakers described the move to replace the existing MGNREGA law with a new framework as a “direct betrayal of the working class,” questioning the government’s claim of extending employment to 125 days when the legally guaranteed 100 days of work is not being ensured on the ground. Presiding over the event, former Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, Giani Kewal Singh, said, “Placing a 40 percent financial burden on states under the new policy is impossible for a debt-ridden state like Punjab. This is a direct attack on the federal structure.” He warned that continued erosion of labour rights could trigger unrest similar to the farmers’ movement. Presenting a research paper, Engineer Tejinder Singh highlighted how digital attendance through NMMS and Aadhaar-based payment systems (ABPS) have created difficulties for workers. “Due to poor internet connectivity in rural areas, labourers are losing wages despite completing work,” he said. Dr Pyara Lal Garg questioned the intent behind the changes and described MGNREGA as a “legal guarantee rather than a welfare scheme.” He stated that renaming it as Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar (VB-GRAM G) and reducing budget allocations amounted to a political attempt to dilute its original spirit. Senior journalist Hamir Singh linked the proposed MGNREGA law changes to growing global trends of centralised governance. Explaining differences between the existing Act and the proposed VB-GRAM G framework, he cautioned that new provisions could weaken employment security and labour protections. Addressing social implications, Jaspal Singh Sidhu noted that over 50 percent of MGNREGA beneficiaries are women. He warned that weakening the scheme would adversely affect women’s empowerment and accelerate forced migration from rural to urban areas, impacting the national economy. Manpreet Kaur Rajpura highlighted the challenges faced by women from nearly 20,000 families associated with MGNREGA works. Karnail Singh Jakhepal, president of the International Democratic Party, proposed that MGNREGA must be protected as a “right, not charity,” with enhanced budgetary support and stronger links to agriculture and environmental conservation. The proceedings were conducted by Dr Khushhal Singh, General Secretary, Kendri Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Chandigarh.

Chandigarh Sewerage Crisis Raises Health Concerns in Sector 15 Green Belt

Overflowing drains and foul air expose residents to health risks amid civic neglect. Chandigarh: Overflowing sewerage drains, polluted air and foul-smelling surroundings have become a grim reality for residents of Chandigarh, raising serious public health concerns and drawing attention to what locals describe as persistent civic negligence by the Municipal Corporation. Watch Video Short on Youtube: Chandigarh Sewerage Crisis Raises Health Concerns in Sector 15 Green Belt In the Sector 15 Green Belt, sewerage gutters constructed in what was once a pristine public space are now reflecting a deteriorating urban environment. Several sewerage drains have remained clogged for months, resulting in dirty water and sludge overflowing into green areas and nearby roads. The situation has forced residents to breathe polluted and toxic air on a daily basis. Morning walkers, senior citizens spending time in parks, and children at play are all being exposed to unhygienic conditions. What was once considered a healthy activity has now become a potential health hazard, as the stench and contamination continue unabated. Residents state that the Chandigarh sewerage crisis is not due to a lack of funds but stems from what they term a “grossly negligent working style” of the Municipal Corporation. Despite regular collection of various civic taxes from citizens, they allege that the return has been overflowing sewage, unbearable foul odor and an increasing risk of disease. According to local accounts, whenever one sewerage drain is opened or cleared, another nearby drain begins to overflow. The contaminated water flows through streets and lanes, polluting the entire environment. In cases where the main sewer line gets blocked, sewage reportedly enters residential houses directly, leading to choked domestic sewerage lines and damage to property. Residents question whether these conditions align with Chandigarh’s long-held identity as “The City Beautiful.” Conceived after the trauma of Partition, Chandigarh was envisioned as a symbol of modern planning, discipline and efficient administration. “When Chandigarh remained under direct administrative control, it was not just a city but a model for the nation,” locals recall. “Today, the same city appears to be sinking into silence marked by filth, blocked sewers and foul smells.” With growing population pressures and expanding civic responsibilities, residents argue that the city was created to showcase what a clean, modern and disciplined urban centre should look like—not to be reduced to a neglected political vote bank. Since the introduction of the Municipal Corporation system, citizens claim that Chandigarh’s cleanliness and aesthetic appeal are under threat, with dark clouds looming over the future of its public health and civic order.

Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement
Mohali, Tri-City Update

Fortis Mohali Performs Breakthrough TPVR Procedure on 31-Year-Old Patient

Minimally invasive cardiac valve replacement saves patient with complex condition Chandigarh, December 4, 2025: In a significant medical breakthrough, Fortis Hospital Mohali has successfully performed its first Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement (TPVR) on a 31-year-old male patient suffering from a complex congenital cardiac condition. This marks one of the first such procedures conducted by a private hospital in North India outside the Delhi-NCR region. The patient was admitted with severe symptoms, including shortness of breath, dizziness, and right-sided heart failure. Medical evaluation revealed dilation and dysfunction of the right atrium and right ventricle, leading to acute breathlessness, generalized swelling, liver enlargement, and early liver failure—conditions that posed a significant risk to the patient’s long-term survival. According to doctors, the patient had undergone intracardiac repair as a child for a congenital defect, during which a pulmonary valve was implanted to regulate blood flow from the right heart to the lungs. Over time, the valve deteriorated, prompting a second valve replacement at a leading New Delhi hospital. The second valve also failed, resulting in advanced complications. With open-heart surgery deemed highly risky, the cardiac team opted for the minimally invasive Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement approach. During the procedure, a sheath was inserted through the groin vein, enabling the medical team—led by Dr. R.K. Jaswal, Head of Department and Director of Cardiology and Director – Cathlabs—to navigate and deploy a new valve at the junction of the right heart and the main pulmonary artery. The procedure was completed successfully, and the patient was discharged the very next day. Explaining the process, Dr. Jaswal said, “Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement (TPVR) is a minimally invasive procedure used to replace a faulty pulmonary valve using a catheter inserted through a vein in the leg or chest, eliminating the need for an open-heart surgery. When the pulmonary valve becomes dysfunctional, the right heart fails, and blood flow to the lungs is compromised. This affects the entire body. TPVR avoids major cuts or surgery, and recovery is fast—patients are usually able to go home within 24 hours.” He added that Fortis Hospital Mohali has built strong capabilities in cardiac sciences, positioning itself as a Centre of Excellence in the region. The successful completion of this TPVR procedure highlights Fortis Mohali’s expanding expertise in advanced, minimally invasive cardiac interventions and its growing role in treating complex congenital heart conditions.

Roadways employees’ strike turns violent as protesters allegedly pour petrol on Dhuri SHO Jasvir Singh; 25 arrested Sangrur: A major incident unfolded in Punjab’s Sangrur district on Friday when Dhuri SHO Jasvir Singh was allegedly set on fire during a violent protest by Punjab Roadways and PRTC (PEPSU) contract employees. The shocking visuals from the site showed flames engulfing the officer as fellow policemen rushed to his aid, using their jackets to douse the fire. According to early reports, Punjab Roadways and PRTC workers had called for a statewide strike to protest against the kilometer scheme and contractual employment policies. Demonstrations were held across Punjab, but tensions escalated in Sangrur when a group of protesters climbed onto buses with bottles of petrol in their hands. Witnesses stated that while SHO Jasvir Singh attempted to intervene and stop the protesters from sprinkling petrol, some of the fuel came in contact with him, triggering the fire. In the chaos that followed, police personnel acted swiftly and managed to extinguish the flames, preventing a potentially fatal tragedy. Officials confirmed that the SHO sustained serious burn injuries on his face, head, and hands, but his condition is reported to be stable. He was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Soon after the incident, the police launched a crackdown and arrested around 25 protesters for their alleged involvement. An investigation is underway to determine who directly ignited the fire and how the situation spiraled out of control. The violent turn of events has shocked the region, raising serious questions about protest safety and law-and-order preparedness. Authorities stated that strict action will be taken against those responsible.
